MENS SOCCER: #4 Mercyhurst Blanks Ship 2-0

MATT POWELL, WSYC SPORTS

Shippensburg’s Men’s Soccer team faced off against nationally ranked #4 Mercyhurst College Wednesday night at David C. See Field.  Although the game was competitive throughout the match, Mercyhurst walked away with a 2-0 win over Shippensburg raising their record to 8-1 on the season.

The game started out slow with neither team having any legitimate chances of scoring, but that was broken when Mercyhurst opened up the scoring in the 27th minute with a goal by Midfielder Austin Solomon shooting from point blank range. The goal was a result of a misplay by the defense. For the remainder of the half, the game was played between both teams’ 18 yard lines again with little opportunity for scoring for either team.

Shippensburg came out and opened up the second half with a burst of energy controlling possession of the ball for almost the first 10 minutes.   Although Shippensburg Midfielders Logan Kuhn and Andrew Collier had great opportunities to tie the game, neither could connect.

Eventually, Mercyhurst woke up and played like the #4 ranked team in the nation, by controlling the ball and rarely letting Shippensburg get an opportunity to push the ball up field.  Mercyhurst connected on a shot by star midfielder Billy Colton, in the 83rd minute, from 25 yards out and ripped the ball past Shippensburg goalkeeper Andrew Foran to raise the score to 2-0 and seal the game.

Although Shippensburg made a few late efforts, none were enough to get themselves on the board as the game ended 2-0.
Shippensburg’s next game will be at Gannon on Saturday. The game will start at 5:30pm.
