Red Raiders Looking to Be Road Warriors, Face CW Post this Saturday

SEAN GALLAGHER, WSYC SPORTS DIRECTOR

The Shippensburg Red Raiders played their first home game of the season this past Saturday and impressed the student body and community with a 30 point victory of the Clarion Golden Eagles. For the first month of the season, the Red Raiders have been road warriors.

Week 1 began with an hour drive south to Shepherdstown, West Virginia for a game against a highly ranked Shepherd football club. Week 2 was a five hour bus ride to Erie to take on the Gannon Golden Knights in an overnight stay on Friday. With week 3 being a home game, it had to feel nice for Shippensburg to not have to make any travel plans that weekend. But after their 54-24 victory Saturday, the team takes its two game winning streak to Long Island this weekend to take on the CW Post Pioneers in the first game of PSAC East competition. Another long trip, especially when you factor in the Long Island Expressway.

Shippensburg's schedule has proven challenging in the first four games. Although it is not because of the teams they play. Of course Shepherd was a handful for the Red Raiders in week 1, but the amount of traveling that the team has done in September. A 57 mile trip to Shepherdstown looks bleak compared to the 278 miles to Gannon. This week, the team travels 239 miles to Brookville, New York to take on the 0-3 Pioneers. If you add the miles traveled, which includes to and from these games, Shippensburg has traveled 1,148 miles in three of their first four games of the season. So the word "road warriors" comes into play for this team.

Luckily, they have two straight home games, October 1 vs. Kutztown on Homecoming and October 8 vs. West Chester. But then they load the buses up for three straight road games, starting with #4 Bloomsburg on October 15.

Sean Gallagher and Chris Field will be calling the action this Saturday at 1pm as the Red Raiders take on CW Post. Listen on WSYC 88.7FM, online at www.wsyc.org, and on the new iPhone app and your Android phone.

Frenette, Ship Offense Runs Over Clarion 54-24

SEAN GALLAGHER, WSYC SPORTS DIRECTOR

The Clarion Golden Eagles surrendered 442 yards on the ground against Bloomsburg last week. At Seth Grove Stadium Saturday, the Red Raiders put up 563 yards, 356 of it was on the ground. Led by Quarterback Zach Zulli and running backs Mike Frenette, Kevin Herod and Roshaan McCain made it another long day for the Clarion defense as the Red Raiders crushed the Golden Eagles 54-24. Frenette ran for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns. Zulli ran for two and had 61 yards on the day. McCain had 91 yards and a touchdown, and Herod had 59 and a touchdown too. It was a day where several players on the Shippensburg offense got an opportunity to shine.

Zulli did what he needed to do through the air. 20-28 on the day, 1 interception. His counterpart Ben Fiscus had a long day. 9-20, an interception and only only managed 74 total passing yards. Fiscus was pulled at the end of the 3rd quarter while Eric Coxon finished the game going 7-13 for 53 yards. The silver lining had to be halfback Brandon Akins, who ran for 101 yards, and two touchdowns, one being a 44 yard run.

Frenette also lead all players in receiving yards with 7 catches and 58 yards. Jacob Baskerville had three catches for 51 yards in a game where running was the big factor in the game.

Last week versus Gannon, Shippensburg had no touchdowns on the ground. This week, all the scores came from the running game.

Shippensburg wins their second straight, improving to 2-1 and will travel to CW Post next Saturday for the first PSAC East game of the year. Clarion is now 0-3 and begins PSAC West play against California (PA) next week.
